Are you still counting the number of LED chips when buying solar lights?

Things to Consider When Buying Solar Light

A customer inquired about our solar lights last month.

                                     Best Selling Solar Lights

The customer informed us that our price is 20% more expensive than our competitor. Our prices have always been competitive in the market. So, we wanted to look into it and asked the customer for a copy of his quotation.

The customer sent it over. In the quotation, the number of LED chips was nearly 500 pcs in some products, and some even have as high as 1,000 pcs. However, there was no specifications or any other information on the battery and the solar panel. That was a red flag. According to our customer, the competitor stressed that their products have many LED chips, and therefore, the brightness will be very high. They even sent a video to prove it. They also emphasized that they used the 1W LED chip, and their lamp can produce 10,000 Lumens.

As responsible and professional salesmen, we explained it to our customer that the competitor made fallacious or misleading statements.

  1. The number of LED chips is not the only factor affecting the brightness. First of all, the solar lamp is different from the traditional grid power lights, especially in the ultra-low voltage state such as 3.2V. So, the power of the LED chip is usually 0.1-0.5W or even lower. And it rarely operates at a full power. The 1W per LED chip is misinformation. Secondly, the solar lights with 10,000 lumens output does exist in the market. Those products are equipped with high end components and their markets prices are in the hundreds of dollars range. They are totally different products from what the customers are interested in.
  2. The battery and the solar panel are two critical components that determine the brightness of the solar lamp. Through the solar panel, sunlight is converted into electricity and stored in the battery. The larger the battery capacity, the longer the lamp can work and the brighter it will be. To have the big battery fully charged, the size or efficiency of the solar panel should be increased accordingly.
  3. The competitor’s lamp looks bright in human eyes. There are a few reasons for that. The first reason is that they used the LED chips with color temperature above 5,000K. It makes people feel it very bright. Another reason is that their battery was programmed to release high output at the beginning. When it was turned on, it gave out high lumens. However, its performance won’t last long. Due to the limit of its battery capacity, the intensity of the light will start diminishing in a few minutes and possibly it won’t last for the whole night. Consumers often judge the solar lamps by the first sight when they are turned on, and have no idea how they would perform in the following hours. This phenomenon is unique for the solar lights. The traditional grid power lights have no batteries and so, have no such issue.
  4. The competitor’s product was with plastic casing. Plastics tend to become fragile and crack under years’ outdoor exposure. Premium products use die-casting aluminum casing. They are more durable and last much longer. Also, whether they are equipped with motion sensor or not, is another aspect to consider when selecting lights.
